Jonathan Horne, the leading specialist in early English pottery, and Alistair Sampson Antiques, the renowned West End dealers in English pottery, oak, fine country furniture, metalware and needlework are forming an alliance after many years of friendly competition and will merge in August 2006 to create a new business trading under the name Sampson & Horne Antiques. Jonathan Horne will be leaving the Kensington Church Street shop, which he has managed with great success for the last thirty years, and the new combined businesses will operate from Alistair Sampson Antique’s existing premises at 120, Mount Street, London W.1.
The premises at Mount Street are being refurbished and redesigned to accommodate Sampson & Horne Antiques and will incorporate new display cases that will give the space a more contemporary feel. Furniture and the complete range of Sampson’s stock will continue to be displayed on the ground and lower ground floors, and a room will be devoted to early English ceramics for which both Jonathan Horne and Alistair Sampson Antiques are well known.
Jonathan Horne holds one of the most comprehensive stocks in the world of medieval pottery, English delftware, slipware, saltglaze, pearlware, creamware, coloured glazed and enamel figures manufactured before 1830. He is the author and publisher of many books on early English ceramics and archaeology. His knowledge and expertise is sought by museums and collectors worldwide.
‘I am delighted with this opportunity to join my old friends at Alistair Sampson Antiques. I think the combination of both businesses will give us an unparalleled position in the market.’
Christopher Banks has worked with Alistair Sampson Antiques for twenty-five years and has been a director for fifteen. Alistair Sampson Antiques specialises in 17th–18th century English antiques with the emphasis on fine country furniture, English pottery and delftware, metalware, treen, decorative and unusual items as well as fine English needlework and naïve paintings.
‘I think this is an excellent time to be merging with Jonathan. Our businesses complement each other and I look forward hugely to our joint progress as Sampson & Horne Antiques.’
Both firms have a strong client base throughout the world and count private collectors, museums, galleries and interior decorators among their customers.
